Half the men in town have been poisoned by dust, and the steel mill has put her father in the ground. Holly is determined to stop the dying.

She has an idea, and the Coin Tree world shows her the way: a mask that could protect workers at a time when America is beginning to wake up to the dangers of unsafe working conditions. With the help of her brother Rex, her mentor Solomon, and Liam, the boy she has come to love, Holly begins building a business around that idea.

But money and ambition test family loyalties and friendships. Powerful men stand in their way and choices begin to pull people apart.

Everyone carries something from their past.

Rex has worked in the shadowy world of moneylenders.

Solomon still carries the grief of his mother’s death.

Holly is terrified that the man in the layer will return.

And in Hazelwood, something is slowly killing the Coin Trees — and poisoning Holly with them.
